Pulau Jemaja

Pulau Jemaja

Jemaja is one of the islands in Anambas Islands Regency, Riau Islands Province (Kepri). But do you know the origin of the name of this island?

Citing various sources, there are two versions of the origin of the name Jemaja. The first version states that Jemaja comes from Jam Raja.

This is because the island was once a resting place for kings from all over. The king referred to here is not the sovereign/ruling king of a kingdom, but the king referred to is strong people or people who are respected by the people in the Jemaja area.

When powerful people went to this island, the clock worn by one of them stayed on the island. From this condition, it is called Jam Raja, which means the island where the king’s clock lives.

Then, another version regarding the origin of the name Jemaja Island is that the island used to be a gathering place for kings (powerful people) to deliberate when there were problems or incidents among the Letung community.

From these two versions, the local people finally called it Jemaja and until now it has stuck to the name Jemaja.

Jemaja is also known for its unique art which has been designated as intangible cultural heritage (WBTB), namely Gubang Anambas. Gubang is a traditional dance and music art from the people of Jemaja District, Anambas Regency.
