Pink Mosque or An-Nur Kawal Grand Mosque on Bintan Island

The An-Nur Kawal Grand Mosque or An-Nur Great Mosque is known as one of the unique religious attractions in the Riau Islands (Kepri).

The location of this mosque with pink paint is on Jalan Wisata Bahari Kawal, Gunung Kijang District, Bintan Regency, Bintan Island , Riau Islands.

You can see the location of the Pink Kepri Mosque via Google Maps.

The Pink Mosque is about 50 meters from the main road to Trikora Beach. The location is easy to find because it is next to the Gunung Kijang District Head Office.

The building area of the Pink Mosque in Bintan reaches 1,000 square meters, which includes the terrace and imam. This unique mosque can accommodate up to 1,500 worshipers. Meanwhile, the land area of the Pink Mosque is around 1 hectare (ha) which includes the parking lot, land next to the mosque and land behind the mosque.

History of the Pink Mosque in Riau Islands

Pink Mosque was built in 2009 by the former Regent of Bintan, Ansar Ahmad, who now serves as Governor of the Riau Islands.

Construction of the Pink Mosque was stopped in 2010, then resumed in 2011.

Why is it painted pink?

The pink paint was recommended by Ansar Ahmad when he was still the Regent of Bintan.

He chose pink because he wanted the An-Nur Grand Mosque to look beautiful, like the Putra Jaya Mosque in Malaysia which was also painted pink.

Continued construction of the Pink Mosque has started on March 23 2022.

Meanwhile, the Head of Construction of the An-Nur Grand Mosque, Ahmad Tohirin, said that the continued construction of the Pink Mosque was focused on the left, right and front terraces, there was also construction of the upper part of the mosque’s plinth all around.

“After that, the ornamentation and painting parts on the outside and inside of the mosque used number one quality,” said Ahmad Tohirin.

Philosophy of the Pink Mosque on Bintan Island, Kepri

As previously mentioned, the pink color at the Pink Mosque , Bintan Island , Riau Islands , was a suggestion from Governor Ansar Ahmad , who at that time was the Regent of Bintan.

He was inspired by the Putra Jaya Mosque in Malaysia which also has a building painted pink.

Apart from being unique because it is pink, the An-Nur Kawal Grand Mosque also has a philosophy.

There are 9 steps to the Pink Mosque . Then, there are also 9 pillars in the mosque.

There are a total of 9 domes in the Pink Mosque and there are 9 windows in this mosque.

Why do 9 pieces have to be uniform?

The Head of Construction of the An-Nur Grand Mosque, Ahmad Tohirin, explained that the number 9 was taken from Wali Songo as the propagator of Islam.

“We took the number 9 from the nine Wali Songo, spreaders of Islam,” he explained.

Furthermore, the windows of the mosque have 99 holes representing Asmaul Husna.

“Then we drew the windows for the 25-hole dome to show the names of the Apostles,” explained Ahmad Tohirin.
