Bintan reopens mini zoo

The Bintan Regency Government, Riau Islands Province (Kepri), has reopened a mini zoo as a place for recreation and education for the public since it closed in 2018.

Bintan Regent Roby Kurniawan said that this mini zoo had not been operating for almost five years due to several problems. However, thanks to the persistence of the district government and related parties, it finally yielded results with the reopening of the animal park which is equipped with several children’s play rides.

“This garden is not yet completely complete. We still have many animals to complete, as well as requirements that must be met,” he said, in Tanjungpinang.

The Bintan Regency Government, he said, carried out a soft launch of the mini zoo last week so that it can be used immediately by the public.

Even now, many people inside and outside the Bintan area visit the mini zoo to just look at the animals and immortalize the moment with their cell phones.

He is optimistic that with the reopening of the mini zoo, tourist visits to Bintan will increase.

“Many school children also come here to travel while getting to know the names of the animals in this garden,” said Roby.

Meanwhile, Head of the Bintan Regency Environmental Service (DLH), Aprizal Bahar, said that the Deer Animal Park, known as a mini zoo, is a form of observation institution for wild plants or animals.

The mini zoo, which is located in the center of Kijang City, East Bintan District, was previously inaugurated in 2011. Its presence is able to attract thousands of visitors every week from both Bintan and outside Bintan.

“Therefore, it needs to be revived in order to provide education to children and it is hoped that it will be useful for society,” said Aprizal.

Apart from that, he continued, the Bintan Regency Government has also written to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) to bring rare animals to the zoo, such as forest people and bears.

The animals that have been in the mini zoo so far include three deer, dozens of love birds and parakeets, a pair of turkeys, eight rabbits, four kate chickens, four geese, dozens of pigeons, nine guinea fowl, a musk rooster, and various types of fish in the pond.

Not only that, there are also a number of supporting facilities for visitors such as toilets, children’s play areas, and places to rest.

“This zoo is open from 08.00 WIB until the afternoon. It’s free,” said Aprizal.
